Mbinga District Council has an area if 11,396 sq.km. of this area 2,999 sq.km. are covered with water and 2,526 sq.km. area fit for agriculture and livestock keeping which constitute 51.7% of the total land area.

The 2002 population census put the population estimates at 403,819 people with 197,789 being males and 206,030 were females.  It was estimated to be growing at 2.9%.  Thus was above the Regional Population growth rates of 2.5% per year.  It however shows that the growth rate had reduced by 0.5% between 1988 and 2002.
